This online dictionary is aimed at providing quick access for learners and speakers of the Niue language. The Niue language is closely related to the indigenous languages of Tonga, Aotearoa/New Zealand, Samoa and Hawai’i.
The aim of this dictionary is to increase the accessibility of the language globally. This is because Vagahau Niue is on the UNESCO Atlas of the Worlds languages endangered (Mosely 2010). Te Ipukarea is grateful to Wolfgang Sperlich for gifting the Institute his Niue language manuscript which forms the basis of this dictionary.
Pending further funding, the aim is to develop an app in the future for both Apple and Android phones.
